THOUSAND OAKS : City Considers 6% Trash Fee Increase

Share

Garbage collection rates may jump more than 6% starting next month if the Thousand Oaks City Council approves a fee hike at a public hearing Tuesday night.

The single-family rate for curbside pickup would increase to $17.65 a month, although those who generate no more than one can of trash a week would be charged $13.95 a month. Residents living in multifamily dwellings would pay $13.30 a month.

The 6.4% rate hike, the first in two years, would take effect Jan. 1.

City staff members are not recommending starting a green-waste collection program because that would cost substantially more.

“A very intense process was used to review and analyze what the rates ought to be,” City Manager Grant Brimhall said. “It’s a pretty heavy-duty analysis, looking at a whole gaggle of things.”

According to Councilman Frank Schillo, “We’re pretty much in line with the rest of the county.”

The most expensive single-family garbage collection rate is in Fillmore, where residents pay $26.84 a month. The least expensive is in Camarillo, where mini-can users pay $13.83 a month.
