A 30-year-old Anaheim man waiting for his son to be treated at an allergy clinic was shot in the face Monday by a carjacker who fled in the man’s car, police said.

Two hours later, Los Angeles police stopped the victim’s vehicle and arrested the driver at 63rd Street and Denver Avenue in Southwest Los Angeles, police said. The alleged assailant was not immediately identified.

Jerry Glen Atkins was approached by a gunman just before 5 p.m. while standing behind his car in the parking lot of the Cigna Health Center in the 1400 block of Brookhurst Street, police said.

The gunman struck Atkins in the face and shot him in the mouth before fleeing in Atkins’ 1988 Ford Taurus station wagon, said David A. Kilde, Cigna security director.

Clinic doctors treated him until emergency personnel arrived and took him to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he was reported in guarded condition there.
