Long Beach : Council to Spend $43,000 From Homeless Fund

Share

The Long Beach City Council voted Tuesday to spend $43,000 from the Mayor’s Fund for the Homeless.

The city will seek proposals from agencies serving the homeless in Long Beach. The remaining $91,000 in the fund will be reserved to establish a multi-service center for the homeless.

Mayor Ernie Kell created the fund in 1991, collecting donations from $1 to $1,000. To date, $2,100 has been spent, leaving a balance of $134,000.

Kell moved last month to spend $84,000 of the fund, saying that contributors wanted results. But homeless advocates successfully pressed the council to set aside more money for the proposed multi-service center. The center would house government and independent social service agencies to provide job training, counseling and other services for the homeless. City officials say they do not know when the center will be established.
