Golf Driving Range at College Endorsed

A plan to have a private developer build and operate a 15-acre golf driving range at Pierce College, partly for student classes and partly as a money-making business serving paying customers, drew enthusiastic support Wednesday from college district officials.

Pierce College President Lowell Erickson presented the plan to a Board of Trustees committee of the Los Angeles Community College District in Downtown Los Angeles. The concept was endorsed by the committee and by interim district Chancellor Neil Yoneji.

District officials discussed the possibility of opening the facility by August. But they said the district still must conduct a financial feasibility study, and probably prepare an environmental impact report and choose a developer.

Erickson added an item to the college’s previously discussed plan that would require the selected developer to contribute about $100,000 to the college for renovating a portion of the campus’ men’s gymnasium into a fitness center.

College officials said the site they are considering is a field area north of the men’s and women’s gyms.
