SOCCER : Belmont’s Defense Smothers Hollywood (1 Shot on Goal)

Belmont’s fast, one-touch passing and strong control at the midfield held hapless Hollywood to one shot on goal in a 2-0 Northeast League victory Wednesday at home.

The Sentinels bombarded the Sheiks with six tries on goal in a scoreless first half, then with seven more shots in the second half, two of which passed the goal line. Striker Eric Hernandez found the back of the net in the 58th minute, firing a rocket off a rebound.

Belmont pressured Hollywood and scored four minutes later when forward Jose Ramirez kicked a curling volley to the upper right corner.

Manual Arts 4, University 1--Striker Edwin Rivera scored once in each half as the Toilers won their first game in a Coastal Conference match at home.

Rivera scored on an assist by Mauricio Lopez in the 27th minute and on an assist by Hector Edmundo Alvarado in the 41st minute.

Hector Portillo converted a penalty kick in the fourth minute on a foul against Alavarado. Alavarado scored in the 58th minute from 10 yards out after controlling a pass by Jorge Escobar.

Locke 5, Jordan 1--Oscar Zendejas gave the Saints a 2-0 lead entering the second half, then made the hat trick for a Southeastern Conference win at home.

Alberto Trujillo scored after Zendejas’ second goal. Edgar Esperanza beat two men inside the penalty box, then placed a shot in the lower right corner for his fifth goal.

In four games, Locke has tallied 18 goals and given up six.

Jaime Delgado scored the Bulldogs’ goal.

San Pedro 2, Dorsey 0--The undefeated Pirates (3-0-1) shut out the visiting Dons in a Southern Pacific Conference match at San Pedro.

Michael Dimassa scored late in the first half, beating the goalkeeper one-on-one at the top of the box. Ive Grgas tallied a chip shot on a free kick over a four-man wall outside the 18-yard mark.

South Gate 1, Huntington Park 1--Rene Garcia’s second-half goal nearly upset host South Gate in a Southeastern Conference match.

But South Gate came back after bombarding the Huntington Park goal, and Ram midfielder Freddy Campos’ goal tied the score with eight minutes remaining.

South Gate out-shot Huntington Park, 15-3.

Wilson 3, Lincoln 2--With four minutes remaining, forward Victor Arana broke past two defenders and faked out the Tiger goalie to score the winning goal in a Northwest League contest.

Banning 3, Washington 0--Christian Vasquez tallied twice and Ricardo Rodriguez once for a Southern Pacific victory.
