Teacher Roy Torres was to have announced Saturday that he will run as a Democrat for the 49th District Assembly seat held by Diane Martinez (D-Rosemead).

Torres, 29, has been working with the Mujeres y Hombres Nobles program under the Los Angeles County Office of Education, Alternative Education Division. Before that he was with the city’s Community Development Department.

Torres was to have made his announcement at Garfield High School, where he was graduated in 1982. He attended Cal Poly Pomona, graduating in political science and public administration in 1987.

Torres said Thursday that he is dismayed by legislators who use their positions to move onto other, more prestigious positions in the state Senate or County Supervisors, while neglecting local issues.

Torres must collect 1,500 signatures to qualify for a place on the June ballot. He is also hoping to raise $60,000 in his campaign.
