Essay Competition Seeks Pupils’ Ideas on City Solidarity
USC, the Los Angeles Unified School District’s Mexican American Education Commission and the Spanish-language newspaper La Opinion are sponsoring an essay contest on “What Students Can Do to Promote Solidarity in a Pluralistic Society Like Los Angeles.” The deadline for submissions is Jan. 14.
The contest, which includes Spanish- and English-language categories, is open to all students at senior high schools in the district. The winner in each category will receive $250, authors of second-place entries will receive $100, and $50 will go to the third-place finishers. Selected essays will be published in La Opinion.
Essays must be 300 to 600 words and written in hand in black ink or typed, double-spaced, on 8 1/2-by-11-inch white, lined paper. Students may enter only one essay, in either English or Spanish. The first page of the essay should include the writer’s full name, home address, a phone number, the student’s grade level, the name of a supervising teacher and the name, address and phone number of the school.
