Carrier Runs Aground Approaching Alameda

ALAMEDA, Calif. —
An aircraft carrier ran aground Friday as it navigated an approach channel to the Alameda Naval Air Station, foundering for 2 1/2 hours before tugboats managed to pull it clear, the Navy said.
The Samuel Gompers was returning home from a week at sea when it got stuck, a Navy spokeswoman said.
