LOS ANGELES COUNTY : Highest-Ranking Black in Sheriff’s Dept. to Retire

Raymon L. Morris, the highest-ranking African American in the history of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, has announced his retirement as assistant sheriff, one of the top three positions under Sheriff Sherman Block.

Morris, 56, of Pomona has had a 31-year career in the Sheriff’s Department and was named assistant sheriff in July, 1992, with authority over the county jails, court services and the detective division. His wife, Sheriff’s Lt. Wilma Morris, is joining him in retirement.

Block named Duane T. Preimsberger, 53, of Huntington Beach, chief of sheriff’s detectives, to replace Morris. Preimsberger has been with the department for 32 years.
