COSTA MESA — A 48-year-old bicyclist died early Tuesday less than four hours after colliding with an oncoming motorcycle.
William L. Miller of Costa Mesa was riding his 10-speed bicycle north on Harbor Boulevard near Hamilton Street at 9:47 p.m. Monday when the accident occurred, police said.
Miller was attempting to make a left turn when he was hit broadside by a southbound motorcycle being driven by a 30-year-old Costa Mesa man who was unable to stop.
Police said Miller appeared to be at fault in the accident. He was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana where he died at 12:35 a.m. Tuesday.
Miller was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, said police Lt. James Watson.
Miller’s “injuries were so extensive that we can’t say whether a helmet would have saved him,” Watson said. “But we encourage people to wear helmets while riding their bicycles.”
The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach where he was treated for minor injuries. He was not cited by police.
