Beverly Hills : 5 Vie for 2 Council Seats

Share

Five residents, including Councilman Robert K. Tanenbaum, took out nominating papers on Monday, the first day of the qualifying period for next year’s City Council race.

Two seats, the ones now held by Tanenbaum and Mayor Maxwell H. Salter, are on the April 12 ballot, City Clerk Jean Ushijima said.

To qualify for the ballot, candidates are required to return nominating papers with at least 20 valid signatures from residents by Jan. 14 or by Jan. 19 if an incumbent does not file.

Other residents who took out papers on the first day were: Alan Robert Block, Les Bronte, Meralee Goldman and Herm Shultz. (As of Tuesday, Salter had not announced whether he will seek reelection.)

Council terms are normally four years, but a change in the 1996 California Presidential Primary date to March 29, 1996, may shorten or lengthen the term by 11 months, Ushijima said.

Los Angeles County officials have said they will not be able to provide services for both the presidential primary and City Council elections in spring of 1996, so Beverly Hills and other California cities have the option of moving their 1996 elections to March, 1995, or March, 1997.
