DOWNTOWN : United Way Seeks Chinese Americans
The United Way of the Greater Los Angeles Area has launched a campaign aimed at getting Chinese American business professionals more involved in the community.
The Chinese Business Initiative, which began recently at a Downtown reception attended by 60 business leaders, encourages Chinese American business professionals to increase their volunteerism and monetary contributions to local nonprofit charities and social service agencies that help the Chinese American community.
United Way officials said various United Way-funded agencies served about 376,000 Asians and Pacific Islanders last year. The Asian American Drug Abuse Program, the American Red Cross and the Chinatown Service Center are among the many United Way-funded agencies that serve Chinese Americans and have Chinese-speaking staff members.
Increasing participation among Chinese American business leaders is also important because the United Way seeks volunteers’ suggestions and comments when allocating money for the agencies; the business professionals can serve as a voice for community needs, according to United Way spokeswoman Cynthia Harding.
Similar programs targeting Latino and Japanese American business professionals are under way.
