Let Some Parks Go to the Dogs

Share

* On the very first morning of my home delivery, I was treated to that wonderful picture of the Laguna Beach Dog Park with a plea for same in San Clemente (“San Clemente Needs a Dog Park,” Dec. 19).

If ever a picture spoke a thousand words, that one did; you could almost feel the joyous spirit of those fortunate pets, running and romping as nature intended.

As a pet owner of three, I can attest to the beneficial effects of playtime with those “other” members of our families. Indeed, after a daily dose of gloom from our media pundits, it is practically obligatory.

Huntington Beach is in the process of deciding what to develop on the remaining acres of our beautiful Huntington Central Park. Three options have been presented. But alas, no mention of a dog park, an option that is a “natural.” True, a dog park may not generate tax income such as the gun range that has been suggested, but it would diffuse residents’ stress, anxiety and violence that have our community emergency rooms filled to capacity. Therefore, it would be cost-efficient.

I would encourage all Orange County cities to investigate those dog parks now in existence, and seriously consider one of their own.
