From today through March, the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium will conduct whale-watching tours.
The 2 1/2-hour voyages will give seafarers an opportunity to view gray whales as they make their way from the cold waters of the Bering Sea to Baja California’s warm lagoons.
During the 12,000-mile round trip, the whales mate and give birth. In protected lagoon waters, pregnant grays bear 2,000-pound, 12-foot calves, which consume up to 50 gallons of their mothers’ milk daily.
In two months, the calves will double in weight and be ready to swim alongside their mothers for the trip home.
If you’re lucky, you’ll see the whales breach, which is when they leap spectacularly.
And if you don’t want to endure the cool weather, you can wait until the migration’s peak in late February or early March, when as many as 150 of the barnacle-encrusted creatures pass through.
