BURBANK : Approval of Schools Contract Expected

A three-year contract for 560 Burbank Unified School District employees is up for ratification in January.

Both sides expect the agreement--which gives no raises but guarantees no layoffs--will be approved.

Membership of the California School Employees Assn. at the school district will vote on the contract Jan. 10, said Terri Marenghi, treasurer and former president of the union.

If approved, the school board would vote on the agreement Jan. 20.

The last salary raise given employees was in the 1991-92 school year, and that was only an increase of 1.25%, said David Aponik, assistant superintendent.

In an attempt to deal with continuing budget cuts, the district has been cutting back on the number of its administration employees, but has not made cuts of employees who deal directly with students, such as teachers. The last such cutback was three years ago when the positions for three librarians--one for each high school and for the middle schools--were cut. Also, the elementary music program had been cut around then.

“At this time, I do not anticipate any reductions in force,” Aponik said.

The new agreement does include language that allows either side to renegotiate salaries and benefits in 1995 and 1996, Aponik said.
