NHL ROUNDUP : Carbonneau Leads Canadiens Over Blues

Guy Carbonneau had three goals and an assist as the Montreal Canadiens stopped the Blues’ five-game winning streak with a 5-2 victory Monday night at St. Louis.

The Canadiens (15-14-6) are in fourth place in the Northeast Division, but they are 4-0-2 intheir last six games against the Blues.

Carbonneau’s first two goals came off rebound shots. He completed the second hat trick of his career, and first since 1983, with 27 seconds left on a shot that slipped under Curtis Joseph’s glove.

Benoit Brunet assisted on four of the Canadiens’ goals, including all three of Carbonneau’s.

Oleg Petrov and Eric Desjardins also scored for the Canadiens.

Ron Sutter and Craig Janney scored for the Blues.

Philadelphia 2, Buffalo 0--Tommy Soderstrom stopped 30 shots at Buffalo to get his second shutout of the season.

Mark Recchi and Eric Lindros scored for the Flyers, who ended a three-game winless streak.

Boston 5, Ottawa 3--The Bruins scored three power-play goals in the second period, two by Ray Bourque, en route to the victory at Ottawa.

The Senators took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Troy Mallette and Dave McLlwain, but the Bruins dominated after that.

Detroit 6, Dallas 0--Sergei Fedorov had two goals and two assists at Dallas as Steve Yzerman returned to the ice for the Red Wings after 26 games.

Yzerman, who was recuperating from a back injury, celebrated his return with a third-period shorthanded goal that helped the Red Wings win for the eighth time in nine games.

Fedorov, the league’s leading scorer, increased his goal total to 28 with a first-period penalty shot and a third-period power play goal.

Chicago 5, Toronto 2--Defenseman Chris Chelios scored two goals and added an assist to lead the Blackhawks at Chicago.

Frantisek Kucera, Brian Noonan and Rich Sutter also scored for the Blackhawks, who extended their home winning streak to eight games.

Edmonton 6, Winnipeg 0--Bill Ranford made 24 saves at Winnipeg to get the Oilers’ first shutout of the season.

Shayne Corson had two goals and two assists.
