Jerry Reynolds resigned Tuesday as general manager of the Sacramento Kings.

Reynolds, 49, said he will remain with the club until a new general manager is hired.

“I have voluntarily resigned as the general manager because I believe such a move is in the best interest of the Sacramento Kings,” Reynolds said. “I believe the team needs to head in a new direction with different leadership.”

The Kings (6-19) have the NBA’s second-worst record.

Neither Reynolds nor Jim Thomas, general managing partner of the struggling franchise, said during a joint news conference how long it would take to pick a new general manager.

Thomas said he planned to conduct a search for a replacement. He said Del Harris, a former NBA coach whom he hired his year as a consultant, would be a candidate.

Reynolds and Thomas said it was Reynolds’ decision to step down. Reynolds joined the Kings as an assistant coach in 1985, when they moved from Kansas City to Sacramento. He served two stints as head coach and two as director of player personnel before becoming general manager two seasons ago.

The Kings have never had a winning record during those years. During the 2 1/2 seasons Reynolds was coach, the Kings compiled a 56-114 record.

Asked if he considered himself a failure, Reynolds replied: “Failure’s a strong word, but certainly a disappointment. The record speaks for itself.”
