San Marino : Not Guilty Plea in Stabbing
A 36-year-old Pasadena man pleaded not guilty last week in municipal court to felony charges of attempted murder and burglary in connection with what authorities claim was a failed murder-for-hire of a San Marino woman.
Lanier Deshon Clayton was arrested Dec. 11 after Kathleen August, a 39-year-old San Marino resident, was stabbed in the chest about 5:45 p.m. by an intruder.
Acting on a tip from teen-agers who saw the assailant flee the home in the 2600 block of Monterey Road in a car, police arrested Clayton a block away, authorities said. Clayton allegedly stated that he was paid by August’s husband, Richard, to kill her, according to police.
Early the next day at the San Marino police station, a detective fatally shot Richard August, a 41-year-old unemployed engineer.
August had just been told he was under arrest when he pulled out a knife and stabbed a detective, police said. As August made threatening motions toward another detective, the wounded officer shot him, police said. Kathleen August is reportedly recovering from her injuries.
