Air Canada has agreed to stop serving French pate to its first-class passengers, and an animal rights group claimed victory for the ban.

Pate de foie gras is produced by force-feeding ducks and geese to expand their livers.

Many birds die as a result, said the Washington-based animal rights group People for Ethical Treatment of Animals, which has urged major airlines to stop serving pate.

The Montreal-based airline has agreed to ban the delicacy on its flights starting in May, PETA spokesman Dan Matthews said.

Air Canada officials confirmed the decision on Friday but did not provide details on why it was made.
