Guilin to Again Head State Avocado Board

Alfonso A. Guilin of Santa Paula has been reelected chairman of the Board of Directors of the California Avocado Commission, a statewide organization that advertises and promotes the consumption of avocados.

Guilin was reelected by the board’s other members to serve as chairman for 1993-94, commission spokeswoman Kari Bretschger said.

The volunteer position is mostly ceremonial. As chairman, Guilin is charged with running the 15-member board’s meetings and is only permitted to vote in the event of a tie, Bretschger said.

Guilin is executive vice president of the Limoneira Co. of Santa Paula, where he has worked for 27 years. He has served on the avocado commission’s board for seven years, Bretschger said.

The board, which includes both independent and cooperative growers, also elected Sam McIntyre of Somis vice chairman of the commission, Al Snider of Fallbrook treasurer and Ron Wild of Vista secretary.

The commission was created by the California Legislature in 1978, replacing the 16-year-old California Avocado Advisory Board. The Santa Ana-based commission, which represents the state’s 6,000 avocado growers, is funded by grower assessments, Bretschger said.
