SANTA ANA : YWCA Gets Grant for Planned Hotel

Share

The YWCA has received a $2.1-million federal grant to run a planned hotel for low-income women, a spokeswoman said Monday.

The YWCA won the grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development to operate a 75-unit single-room-occupancy hotel, which could be built by 1996, said YWCA executive director Mary Douglas.

Receiving the grant “is a wonderful step forward for the county. It’s literally verifying that we do have people in need,” Douglas said.

The YWCA now provides temporary shelter for about 38 women a day at its site at 1411 N. Broadway but offers no permanent housing. The new hotel will be built as an addition to that shelter and provide small rooms with kitchens and bathrooms for about $350 to $375 a month, she said.

The YWCA is still seeking public grants and private donations to help build the hotel. Depending on how quickly the money can be raised, the hotel could be built within two years, Douglas said.
