School Board Vote a Barrier to Reform
* Shame on Burbank School Board members Joseph Hooven and Elena Hubbell for voting against the John Muir Middle School request for staff development time.
Don’t they read anything about education reform? Reform can’t happen without teachers’ having time to talk to other teachers.
The California Department of Education’s plan, “Second to None,” calls for schools to provide planning time for teachers. Muir’s students would have benefited from the creative teaching methods their teachers could have developed during those two hours.
You can’t shout school reform and expect it to happen by magic. Effective change takes time and planning. Everyone loses when school boards care more about the vote than about education.
