Father John Zanetos; Ex-Pasadena Cleric

Father John Zanetos, the retired priest of St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Church of Pasadena, has died. He was 73.

Zanetos, who headed the Pasadena church from 1982 until his retirement in 1986, died Jan. 1 in Boca Raton, Fla. He had suffered a heart attack and stroke Nov. 19.

A native of Cyprus, Zanetos came to the United States in 1937 and became a citizen. He was educated at the Greek Orthodox Seminary in Pomfret, Conn., and the Hartford Seminary.

In 1956, after serving in various churches in New York, he was named dean of the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of New England in Boston, where he remained for 26 years.

After he retired in Florida, Zanetos organized the Retired Greek Orthodox Clergy of America and was its president for four years.

Zanetos is survived by his wife, Irene; his father, Costas, of Cyprus; a son, Dean, of Los Angeles; a daughter, Eugenia Buba, of Andover, Mass., and four grandchildren.

The family has asked that any memorial donations be made to the Hellenic College, 50 Goddard Ave., Brookline, Mass. 02146.
