NHL ROUNDUP : Francis’ Goal in Overtime Lifts Penguins Over Sabres

Ron Francis scored with five seconds to play in overtime Friday night, giving the Pittsburgh Penguins a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at Buffalo.

It was Francis’ second goal of the game and capped a comeback by the Penguins. Francis had scored on the power play at 14:51 of the first period to put the Penguins ahead, 1-0.

Ed Patterson and Joe Mullen also scored for Pittsburgh. Yuri Khmylev scored twice for Buffalo.

“It was a very tough loss,” Sabre Coach John Muckler said. “They gave us all kinds of chances and we didn’t score. We just couldn’t put them away.”

Edmonton 6, Quebec 4--Defensemen Dave Manson and Igor Kravchuk scored 42 seconds apart to highlight a four-goal third period to rally the Oilers at Edmonton.

Steven Rice and Jason Arnott also scored in the third period for the Oilers, who trailed, 3-2, midway through the period.

New Jersey 4, Florida 1--John MacLean scored a pair of first-period goals to lead the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.

The victory was the fourth in a row for the Devils and their seventh in nine games. The victory also improved their record within the Atlantic Division to 11-6.

The loss was Florida’s second in a row after a five-game unbeaten streak.

New York Islanders 6, Calgary 2--Pierre Turgeon had two goals and an assist, and Jamie McLennan stopped 23 shots in his NHL debut at Uniondale, N.Y.

The victory ended a four-game losing streak for the Islanders.

Turgeon, who recorded his first multi-goal game since Nov. 21, scored his second of the game at 10:12 of the third period, converting a pass from Tom Kurvers to give the Islanders a 5-2 lead.
