HUNTINGTON BEACH : District to Discuss Student Access Policy

Share

Reacting to the public outcry over a gay support group at Fountain Valley High School, the Huntington Beach Union High School District trustees will consider Tuesday whether to eliminate a policy that allows the students to meet.

Trustees are expected to vote on the future of the district’s equal access policy, which allows student groups whose activities are not curriculum-based to meet on campus. The policy has been in effect since 1990.

Officials expect a large turnout at the 7:30 p.m. meeting at the district’s offices, 10251 Yorktown Ave. About 175 chairs will be set up in the boardroom, and another room equipped with speakers will handle any overflow.

The issue is not scheduled as a public hearing, but the public will be permitted to address the board.

If trustees decide to drop the equal access policy, it would not only affect the Student Alliance, whose members are both gay and heterosexual, but other student organizations such as religious or service groups as well.
