NHL ROUNDUP : Capitals’ Tabaracci Is Perfect

Michal Pivonka scored two goals and Rick Tabaracci stopped 32 shots for the fifth shutout of his career Sunday night to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.

Washington is 4-1-2 in its last seven games while winning only its fourth game within the Atlantic Division (4-9-2).

Two Devil winning streaks were broken--four games overall and six in a row on home ice.

Sylvain Cote and Peter Bondra also scored for Washington. It was Tabaracci’s second shutout of the season.

Edmonton 4, Chicago 2--The Oilers got power-play goals from Igor Kravchuk and Zdeno Ciger at Chicago. It was the Blackhawks’ third loss in a row.

Kravchuk’s goal gave Edmonton, only 16th in the league on the power play (18.3%), a 1-0 lead, and Shjon Podein, playing in only his third game since Nov. 24, broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Oilers the lead for good when he scored his first goal since April 11.

Buffalo 5, Vancouver 3--Rookie Derek Plante scored his 13th and 14th goals for the Sabres at home, where they handed Vancouver its fifth loss in six games.

Plante snapped a 3-3 tie 6:22 into the final period, beating goalie Kay Whitmore through the legs with a five-footer.

The victory was only the second in the last six games for Buffalo.

Dallas 2, St. Louis 1--Mike McPhee scored shorthanded with 12:39 to play to snap a 1-1 tie, and goalie Andy Moog stopped 24 shots for the Stars at Dallas.
