Two men were in critical condition after one of them drove into oncoming traffic on Carbon Canyon Road on Monday morning and collided with two other vehicles, police said.
Officers closed both sides of the road between Olinda Drive and the border of San Bernardino County for three hours while workers cleared the 8 a.m. collision. The accident backed up westbound traffic for several miles as commuters sought alternate routes into Orange County.
Louis Francisco Rodriguez, 44, of Chino Hills was eastbound when he crossed into the westbound lane near Olinda Drive, Sgt. Jon Strash said, adding that officers are checking to see if Rodriguez’s driving was affected by a diabetic condition.
Rodriguez collided with a van driven by 49-year-old Restituto Tamag and a car driven by 33-year-old John Williams.
Williams and Rodriguez were flown to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where they were listed in critical condition, Strash said.
Williams’ two children, a 5-year-old and a 7-year-old, were taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana with unspecified injuries. Tamag was uninjured, police said.
The victims are all from Chino Hills, Strash said.
