Glendale police on Tuesday said they were seeking as many as six suspects in a drive-by shooting that wounded a 16-year-old boy.

The boy was shot Monday on North Kenilworth Avenue near Hoover High School and Toll Middle School.

According to witnesses, the assailants were in two cars, a white Toyota Camry and a white Chevrolet Camaro or El Camino.

A passenger in one of the vehicles pointed a small, black handgun at a group of teen-agers who had gathered on the sidewalk and fired three times, witnesses said.

Police spokesman Lief Nicolaisen said the shooting was probably gang-related. The victim, whose name was not released, was shot in the abdomen. He was treated at Thompson Memorial Medical Center in Burbank, according to police reports.

Nicolaisen said the boy underwent surgery Monday night and was listed in stable condition at that time. He declined to say whether the victim remained hospitalized Tuesday.

No one had been arrested as of Tuesday afternoon. Police are looking for the two suspect vehicles and two to six youths, ages 16 to 18.

Monday’s shooting was the second gang-related incident this month near a Glendale high school, police said. Last Tuesday, members of a different gang fired shots at a Glendale High student who was across the street from campus during lunch. No one was injured.

Police on Tuesday stepped up patrols around those two campuses, Nicolaisen said.
