COLLEGE BASKETBALL : No. 4 Arkansas Gets Past LSU

Arkansas’ Clint McDaniel made a free throw with 39 seconds left to break the game’s final tie and Louisiana State’s Jamie Brandon missed two shots in the final seconds as the fourth-ranked Razorbacks slipped by the Tigers, 84-83, Tuesday night at Fayetteville, Ark.

McDaniel, who was fouled after a steal near midcourt, missed the second of his two free throws. Brandon’s 12-footer hit the rim, but the Tigers, 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the Southeastern Conference, got the rebound and he missed again from about the same distance.

Dwight Stewart added 17 points for Arkansas (11-1, 2-1) and Scotty Thurman had 15. Ronnie Henderson led LSU with 25 points.

No. 11 Indiana 89, Iowa 75--Brian Evans, showing no ill effects of a separated shoulder, scored a career-high 21 points and Todd Lindeman gave Indiana a second-half lift at Iowa City, Iowa.

Damon Bailey and Pat Graham each scored 20 points for the Hoosiers (9-2, 2-0 Big Ten), who have won five in a row over Iowa (6-6, 0-3).

No. 13 Temple 76, Penn 65--Aaron McKie scored 24 points and Eddie Jones added 22 as Temple rallied in the final eight minutes at Philadelphia to end the Quakers’ eight-game winning streak.

Trailing, 51-50, with 7:55 to play, Temple (8-2) outscored Penn, 15-3, to take a 65-54 lead with 2:20 left and went on to its 13th consecutive victory over the Quakers (9-2).

Dickie Simpkins scored 23 points, including 14 in the first half, and Michael Smith added 19 points to lead Providence (9-2, 3-1) to an 86-72 Big East Conference victory over Rhode Island (5-5, 2-3) at Providence, R.I. . . . Dan Cross stole an inbounds pass with 23 seconds to play and then made two free throws to lift Florida (12-2) to a 69-64 victory over South Florida (8-5) at St. Petersburg, Fla. . . . Eric Eberz scored 19 points to lead Villanova (6-5) to an 81-80 victory over Richmond (4-7) at Richmond, Va.
