Baldwin Park, Arroyo and Rosemead are among several San Gabriel Valley wrestling programs expected to challenge for team titles and produce several individual champions this season.

Baldwin Park, a perennial Sierra League contender, defeated West Covina in its league opener. The Braves are led by seniors Gus Fonseca and Tommy Montoya.

Rosemead features junior Mike Kawamura, the top-ranked in the state at 112 pounds, and senior Conan Riojas, ranked fourth in the state at 152 pounds.

Arroyo, which defeated cross-town rival El Monte in its Mission Valley League opener, includes Sergio Estrada at 112 pounds, Anthony Chavez (125) and Javier Vasquez (130).

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The Pasadena City College men’s basketball team begins play in the South Coast Conference on Saturday when the Lancers travel to Mt. San Antonio College.

PCC, under Coach George Terzian, in his 15th season as coach, entered the week 10-10. The Lancers are led by sophomore guard Todd Williams, who is averaging 17.6 points a game and is making 50% of his three-point attempts.

PCC recently lost two key players because of injuries. Maurice Pryor suffered a knee injury and Demetrius Collier a thigh injury. Both players could be lost for the season.

The PCC women’s team entered the week 2-10 and 0-2 in the South Coast Conference.

The Lancers, with 11 freshmen on the 14-player roster, travel to El Camino on Friday.

Sophomore Chris Zboril is averaging 17.5 points a game for PCC. Freshman Monica Rocha is averaging 11 rebounds.

COLLEGES

The Azusa Pacific men’s basketball team, coming off a championship performance in its own tournament last week, began defense of its Golden State Athletic Conference title this week.

The Cougars, who entered the week with a 14-2 record and were ranked seventh in National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics Division I, played Southern California College on Tuesday in a conference opener. Azusa Pacific continues its GSAC schedule Saturday against Fresno Pacific.

Since the GSAC was formed in 1986, no school has won consecutive championships. But Azusa Pacific, which was unbeaten in conference play last season, is favored to repeat.

Scott Day is averaging 17.1 points a game for Azusa Pacific. Ronnie Winbush is averaging 16.3 points and 5.9 rebounds.

The Cal State Los Angeles men’s basketball team got off to a surprising 2-0 start in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn. with victories over Cal Poly Pomona and UC Riverside.

The Golden Eagles began conference play with a 5-8 record, but beat Pomona, 70-49, and Riverside, 74-69.

Cal State L.A., under Coach Henry Dyer, ended Pomona’s six-game winning streak.

Pomona fell to 9-7 and 0-2 with a 90-63 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.

The Cal Poly Pomona women’s basketball team begins play in the CCAA this week after completing its nonconference schedule with a 12-3 record.

The Broncos, who have won or shared 12 consecutive CCAA championships, defeated Azusa Pacific, 103-58, in a nonconference game Saturday. Center Mildred Conston scored 35 points. Jennifer Harney added 19 points for Pomona.

Pomona plays host to Cal State L.A. tonight and travels to Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday.

PREP ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Jeron Roberts, Charter Oak-- Roberts, a 6-foot-4 senior, scored 46 points in Charter Oak’s 75-73 Miramonte League victory over Garey.

Roberts, who is averaging more than 35 points a game, has scored more than 40 three times this season.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Rodney Harris, Cal State Los Angeles--Harris, a guard, scored 21 points in the Golden Eagles’ 74-69 victory over UC Riverside as Cal State L.A. improved to 2-0 in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.

Harris made two steals and three free throws in the final minute to preserve the victory.

MISCELLANY

The San Gabriel Valley Kids Wrestling Club is staging sign-ups each Monday from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the small gym at Arroyo High in El Monte. CALENDAR

A roller hockey program for children ages 7 to 16 is being staged at Skate Junction in West Covina.

The program, which will be conducted Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays, will focus on fundamentals. The cost is $30 for initiation and $30 a month.

A baseball clinic featuring instruction from current and former professional baseball players from the San Gabriel Valley will be staged Saturday through Monday at Temple City High.

The clinic, open to boys and girls ages 6 to 16, will run from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. daily. The cost is $75.

The Foothill-Citrus Umpires Assn. will conduct its first meeting of the season on Jan. 23 at Walnut High.
