Need a few examples of how dominant The Master’s College was in Thursday’s nonconference men’s basketball game against visiting Point Loma Nazarene?

The Mustangs hit 56.8% of their shots from the field in the first half to take an 18-point lead at intermission, then topped that mark in the second half (58.3%), despite clearing their bench with six minutes left in a 112-76 blowout victory.

Forward Colin Lubsey scored 18 points for The Master’s (16-3) while connecting on seven of 10 shots from the field. Three of Lubsey’s seven baskets came on dunks and another three were layups.

Lubsey scored his final points on a three-point play with 10:45 left in the game to give the Mustangs a 79-53 lead.

During one stretch in the second half, The Master’s scored 10 baskets on 13 possessions and none of the Mustangs’ shots came from further than three feet away.

“This was a good night for us,” The Master’s Coach Bill Oates said in a massive understatement. “Everyone got to play. Everyone contributed. . . . There are certain things we could have done better, but overall, it was a good game for us. We shot the ball well. We boarded well and we shared the ball well.”

Lubsey concurred with his coach.

“It was a real nice game,” he said. “It was a lot of fun. It was really a team effort.”

The win was the fifth in a row for the Mustangs and their 12th in the last 13 games.

Pt. Loma Nazarene (8-9) took a 2-0 lead on a basket by Eddie Morgan, but even then it became obvious that the Crusaders were going to be in for a long night as Morgan’s points came after a Taylor Golonka shot was blocked by Lubsey.

The final play of the first half put an exclamation point on the Mustangs’ dominance as Mike Penberthy hit a two-point shot at the buzzer while being fouled.

He converted the free throw with no time left on the clock to give The Master’s a 52-34 lead.

The Mustangs scored at will to start the second half, but less-than-stellar defense allowed the Crusaders to stay within 18 to 20 points until The Master’s went on an 18-8 run to take an 81-53 lead with 10:25 remaining.

The Master’s made seven of eight shots from the field during that stretch, which was capped by a Penberthy layup.

“It’s easy to back off in a game like this,” Lubsey said. “But then you have to get your head back on straight and that’s what we did. We started hitting the boards, getting out on the break, passing the ball and running our offense.”

All 12 Mustang players scored, led by Emeka Okenwa with 19 points, Lubsey, Rogerio Soares (17) and James Mosley (15).

Okenwa added a game-high 15 rebounds with point guard Andy Thompson contributing eight points and a game-high 11 assists.
