Welles’ ‘Shadow’

Share

Susan King’s article about the forthcoming film version of the old radio serial “The Shadow” states that “Orson Welles was the seductive voice of the super-hero on the famed ‘40s radio series” (“Putting the Shadow in His Place,” Jan. 6).

Welles was the radio voice of the Shadow in 1937 and 1938 and might have continued in that capacity if he hadn’t done the 1938 “War of the Worlds” broadcast. He suddenly became too well known, and the powers-that-be at the network decided he could not continue as the Shadow.

“The Shadow” debuted Aug. 1, 1930, and ran until Dec. 26, 1954. It was re-syndicated in the ‘60s and ‘70s and still can occasionally be heard on local radio.
