NBA ROUNDUP : Mavericks Set Home Loss Mark

The Dallas Mavericks set an NBA record for home-court futility Saturday night, dropping their 17th consecutive game at Reunion Arena--a 104-87 loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

Terry Cummings and David Robinson scored 20 points each to pace the Spurs, who have won five in a row and 10 of their last 11. Dennis Rodman had 19 rebounds and Robinson 10.

The Mavericks had been tied with the Orlando Magic, who lost 16 in a row at home over two seasons in 1990.

Jamal Mashburn led Dallas with 26 points, including five three-pointers.

The Mavericks’ 2-32 record is the worst in NBA history after 34 games. Dallas tied the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers for consecutive losses in one season when it dropped 20 in a row in November and December.

New York 97, Detroit 88--Derek Harper had his best game as a Knick, scoring 18 points and leading a fourth-quarter comeback that extended the Pistons’ losing streak to 12 games.

The Knicks were held to 12 points in the third quarter and trailed by five entering the fourth. They held Detroit to two points in the first 6:23 of the fourth and put the game away with a 16-0 run.

Harper, acquired from the Dallas Mavericks on Jan. 6, and Anthony Mason each had six points during the decisive run. Patrick Ewing led the Knicks with 23 points and John Starks added 18.

Chicago 82, Houston 76--Scottie Pippen scored 25 points and B.J. Armstrong had five in the final 1:57 as the Bulls held off a fourth-quarter Rocket rally at Chicago.

The Rockets, who missed four of six free throws in the final 1:06, got 29 points from Hakeem Olajuwon in their lowest scoring game this season.

Cleveland 110, Philadelphia 67--The Cavaliers turned in the best defensive performance in team history at Richfield, Ohio.

Cleveland, which has won 10 in a row against Philadelphia, got 20 points each from Brad Daugherty and Gerald Wilkins in ending the 76ers’ three-game winning streak. Chris Mills added 16 and Larry Nance 13.

Philadelphia’s 67 points were the fewest scored in an NBA game this season and fewest by the 76er franchise since it moved from Syracuse in 1963.

Phoenix 119, Sacramento 103-- A.C. Green scored 22 of his career-high 35 points in the second half and also had a career-high 19 rebounds as the Suns ended the Kings’ five-game home winning streak.

The Suns outscored the Kings, 23-10, during the final 5:30 for their 11th consecutive victory over Sacramento, a streak dating to Nov. 26, 1991.

Trevor Wilson, starting only the second game of his career, had career-highs of 25 points and 10 rebounds to lead Sacramento.

Indiana 94, Atlanta 91--Malik Sealy scored on a baseline drive with 35 seconds to play, giving the Pacers the lead for good at Indianapolis.

The loss ended the Hawks’ seven-game winning streak.

Orlando 113, Milwaukee 105--Shaquille O’Neal scored 33 points on 13-of-16 shooting and had 14 rebounds to lead the Magic at Milwaukee.

Dennis Scott added a season-high 23 points off the bench and Nick Anderson also had 23 as the Magic won for the ninth time in the last 14 games.

Seattle 97, Miami 78--Shawn Kemp had 25 points and 14 rebounds and Detlef Schrempf keyed a game-breaking 14-3 run with six points at Seattle.

The SuperSonics led, 79-67, before pulling away with the 14-3 run for a 93-70 lead.

Schrempf had 15 points and a season-high 13 rebounds. The SuperSonics are 16-1 at home this season.
