SEAL BEACH : City Seeks to Restore Tram Service at Pier

Share

The city might bring back tram service on the Seal Beach Pier, once fire repairs to the landmark structure are completed later this year.

City Manager Jerry L. Bankston said that the Ruby’s restaurant and a charter fishing business at the end of the pier are interested in reviving the city-operated tram, which was frequently used by residents from Leisure World.

The service was halted in 1991 after a fire burned the heavy wood pilings in the middle of the pier. Workers installed temporary supports that made it impossible for the tram to travel along the pier, Bankston said.

City officials hope to select a contractor soon to make permanent repairs to the pier. The project is expected to cost $225,000. The work is covered by insurance, but the city must pay a $100,000 deductible. The city also plans to repair some seismic damage caused by the 1992 Landers earthquake.

The pier will be closed for two to three weeks during the construction. Officials hope work will be completed before the busy summer tourist season.

Bankston said the city might consider using an electric-powered tram similar in appearance to a golf cart to take passengers around the pier. A smaller tram than the one previously used would be easier to maneuver and would cost less to insure, he said.
