EARTHQUAKE / THE LONG ROAD BACK : Finding Your Route

Navigating the Southland’s quake-mangled freeway system will take planning and perseverance, probably for many months ahead. Here are the major road closures and some alternate routes around them:

Roads

The following roads are closed:

1. Pacific Coast Highway, from Santa Monica Freeway at McClure Tunnel to Temescal Canyon.

Primary alternate: Northbound: Take 405 Freeway, west on Sunset Boulevard, left on Temescal Canyon to Pacific Coast Highway. Southbound: Left on Temescal Canyon, east on Sunset Boulevard to the 405 Freeway south.

2. Golden State Freeway (I-5) northbound, closed at Antelope Valley Freeway because of bridge damage, but truck lane to Antelope Valley Freeway is open.

Primary alternate: Take northbound Antelope Valley Freeway to San Fernando Road (Route 126), left on Lyons Avenue to I-5.

3. The southbound Golden State (I-5) Freeway is closed between Lyons Avenue and the Foothill Freeway (210), and the northbound Golden State Freeway is closed from the Antelope Valley Freeway to Lyons Avenue.

Primary alternate: Exit at Lyons Avenue, east to San Fernando Road (Route 126), south on Sierra Highway to San Fernando Road, south on Sepulveda Boulevard to Roxford Street to I-5.

4. The eastbound Santa Monica Freeway is closed from Centinela Avenue to Washington Boulevard because of bridge collapse.

Primary alternate: Exit Pico Boulevard or Centinela Avenue. Use eastbound Pico Boulevard.

5. The westbound Santa Monica Freeway is closed from Washington Boulevard to the San Diego Freeway (405) interchange because of a bridge collapse.

Primary alternate: Exit at Washington Boulevard to Apple Street, right on Fairfax Avenue, left at Venice Boulevard, right at Cadillac Avenue, left at La Cienega Boulevard to westbound Santa Monica.

6. The westbound Santa Monica Freeway connector to the southbound San Diego Freeway is closed.

Primary alternate: Westbound exit at Overland Boulevard, take National Boulevard left onto southbound 405 Freeway on-ramp.

7. Eastbound Simi Valley Freeway (118) is closed from Tampa Avenue to the San Diego Freeway.

Primary alternate: Exit onto southbound De Soto Avenue or Tampa Avenue to Devonshire Street, left on Devonshire Street to 405, 5 or 210 freeways.

8. Westbound Simi Valley Freeway is closed from the Foothill Freeway to the San Diego Freeway. All connectors from the Golden State and Foothill freeways are also closed.

Primary alternate: From northbound 405 Freeway, exit at Roscoe Boulevard or Devonshire Street, left to Tampa Avenue or De Soto Avenue, right to westbound Simi Valley Freeway.

9. All connectors from the westbound Foothill Freeway to the westbound Simi Valley Freeway are closed.

Primary alternate: Foothill Freeway through lanes are open.

10. All connectors from the westbound Foothill Freeway to the Golden State Freeway are closed.

Primary alternate: Exit Foothill Freeway on Roxford Boulevard, proceed west to I-5.

11. The northbound San Diego Freeway is closed at Devonshire Street.

Primary alternate: Exit at Nordhoff Street, east on Nordhoff Street to I-5 northbound.

12. The northbound San Diego Freeway connector to the westbound Simi Valley Freeway is closed.

Primary alternate: Exit at Nordhoff Street, west to Tampa Avenue, then north to westbound Simi Valley Freeway.

13. The southbound San Diego Freeway is closed at Rinaldi Street.

Rail

Amtrak service between Los Angeles and San Luis Obispo will resume at 8 a.m. today. Call 800 USA-RAIL for information.

Mass Transit

MTA bus lines, including the Blue Line trains and Red Line subway, are in full service. There will be intermittent detours as workers clear earthquake damage on the following bus lines:

Line 90: Los Angeles, Sunland and Sylmar (via Pennsylvania Avenue)

Line 94: Los Angeles, San Fernando, Sylmar (via San Fernando Road)

Line 236: From Ventura Boulevard to Rinaldi Street and north/south on Woodley Avenue and Balboa Boulevard

Line 243: From Woodland Hills along Ventura Boulevard to Winnetka Avenue

Metrolink: Five cars will be added to trains on the Santa Clarita line.

The following train lines will resume service at 8 a.m. today: 100, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 107, 108, 109, 110 and 111. For more information, call (800) 371-LINK.

Tough Time for Truckers

Truckers were left stranded in the San Joaquin Valley; such tie-ups may have economic reverberations. Map shows suggested alternative routes for the state’s long-distance truckers.
