Center Doug Gilmour of the Toronto Maple Leafs suffered a “badly bruised bone” in Wednesday night’s game with the Hartford Whalers and will probably sit out Saturday’s All-Star game at New York, his coach said.

“I don’t think he’s going to go to the All-Star game,” Pat Burns said after the teams tied, 3-3, at Hartford, Conn.

Gilmour, who is third in the NHL with 67 points, injured his right arm during the second period when he collided with Hartford’s Pat Verbeek. Gilmour was taken to St. Francis Hospital and Medical Center, where X-rays were negative.

Gilmour leads the Maple Leafs and is second in the NHL to Wayne Gretzky with 52 assists.

Bill Watters, Toronto’s assistant general manager, said in a between-periods television interview that there were fears that Gilmour’s arm was broken.

“I don’t know where all those reports of him having a broken arm came from--he’s on the other side right now and giggling away,” Burns told the Sports Network.

Verbeek scored his second goal at 12:40 of the third period.

Montreal 3, Boston 3--Oleg Petrov scored at 15:15 of the third period to give the Canadiens a tie at Montreal less than three minutes after Cam Neely had scored his second goal of the game--and 28th in 32--for the Bruins.

Edmonton 1, Buffalo 1--A goal on a 45-foot slap shot by rookie Jason Arnott with 2:26 to play gave the Oilers a tie at Buffalo.

Philadelphia 8, St. Louis 3--Eric Lindros scored three goals and had an assist to lead the Flyers at Philadelphia.

Tampa Bay 4, N.Y. Islanders 3--Chris Gratton scored at 4:20 of overtime to give the Lightning a victory at St. Petersburg, Fla.

Florida 5, Washington 1--Bob Kudelski and Jesse Belanger each scored twice at Miami to lead the Panthers to their third consecutive victory. The Panthers head into the All-Star break with a 19-17-8 record. No first-year expansion team has ever finished with a winning record.

New Jersey 4, Winnipeg 0--Randy McKay scored two goals and rookie Martin Brodeur recorded his second shutout to lead the Devils at Winnipeg.

Calgary 4, Vancouver 3--Robert Reichel’s goal at 13:16 of the third period gave the Flames the victory at Vancouver after the Canucks had rallied from a 3-1 deficit.
