Buffalo defensive lineman Bruce Smith: “All we heard all week long was how everybody wants to see Joe Montana and the Dallas Cowboys or San Francisco, and we hadn’t even played yet. That’s no respect at all. . . . The hell with what everybody wants to see. If they don’t want to watch, don’t turn the TV on.”

Buffalo quarterback Jim Kelly on the play of his offensive line: “They opened holes like you wouldn’t believe. When I hand the ball off and I turn around and I can see the hole, I know they are doing their jobs.”

Sunday, Kansas City got neither a sack nor an interception. . . . Thomas set a team playoff record with his 186 yards rushing, but it is only the fourth-highest total in postseason history. Eric Dickerson set the record as a Ram when he rushed for 248 yards against the Cowboys in 1985. . . . Thomas scored three touchdowns on the ground Sunday and Kansas City’s Marcus Allen got one. Buffalo Coach Levy has won both postseason games in which he has faced Kansas City Coach Marty Schottenheimer, but is 0-4 lifetime against Schottenheimer in the regular season. . . . Schottenheimer is now 0-3 in AFC title games, having lost his previous two to the Denver Broncos.
