NFL PLAYOFFS / DAILY REPORT : NFC

Charles Haley, former 49er outcast, celebrated his second consecutive championship game victory over his former teammates as if it were the most important game he will play this season.

“This was my Super Bowl,” said Haley, the Cowboy defensive end who had one sack and one blocked pass. “We play Buffalo in the Super Bowl, it’s just another game for me. This is my game right here. Everybody knows how I feel about it.”

Quarterback Steve Young of the 49ers certainly knows. Because Haley was in the backfield on nearly every play, Young spent as much time talking to Haley as his teammates.

“All afternoon, we talked,” Young said. “He would knock me down and I would say ‘Nice hit,’ or I would get off a good throw and he would say, ‘Nice pass.’ ”

Apparently, baseball clubs aren’t the only sports franchises that can build a team to fit a stadium.

The 49ers claim that the Cowboys are the perfect team for Texas Stadium. They say the combination of their speedy defense, and the noise inside the partially enclosed stadium, is tough to stop.

“They get off the ball so quick, and it’s so loud, it’s hard for the linemen to pick each other up and let each other know what is going on,” tackle Steve Wallace said. “They are in there before you know it, and there’s not much you can do about it.”

Wallace said there was another factor Sunday.

“I know Jimmy told the people to get drunk before the game,” he said. “By the sounds of things, they listened to him.”
