A 26-year-old man has been charged with defrauding seven Ventura County banks out of more than $17,000 in connection with a credit-card scam, prosecutors said Monday.

A preliminary hearing for David Jeffrey Wilkinson of West Hollywood has been scheduled for Friday, Deputy Dist. Atty. William R. Redmond said.

Redmond said Wilkinson was able to withdraw money from the banks by using fraudulently acquired credit cards. He withdrew money from six Bank of A. Levy branches between Thousand Oaks and Ventura and one undisclosed Bank of America branch, according to the prosecutor.

The incidents occurred between last Oct. 7 and Oct. 27, Redmond said.

Ventura County East Valley Division deputies were able to trace the withdrawals to Wilkinson, and he was arrested Jan. 7, Redmond said.

Wilkinson, who has pleaded not guilty, is being held in Ventura County Jail in lieu of $25,000 bail.

He faces up to six years in state prison if convicted on charges of commercial burglary, grand theft and credit-card fraud, Redmond said.
