EARTHQUAKE: THE LONG ROAD BACK : Damage Report

Here are some facts and figures on the aftermath of last week’s magnitude 6.6 earthquake:

* DEATHS: State estimate increased from 55 to 57

* INJURIES: More than 7,315 people have been treated and released at hospitals; about 1,241 were admitted for care.

* AFTERSHOCKS: There were at least five aftershocks of 3.0 or greater magnitude on Monday. Since the initial magnitude 6.6 quake, scientists have recorded more than 2,500 aftershocks.

* DAMAGE: More than 10,000 buildings had been inspected. Officials have declared 4,322 buildings, including 14,576 dwelling units, at least partially unsafe.

* ARRESTS: The Los Angeles Police Department has taken 342 people into custody in a 5 1/2-day period. Most were general arrests and not for curfew violations or looting. On a typical day, there are about 550 arrests in the city.

* HOMELESS: Hundreds remained housed in Army tents at six San Fernando Valley parks as the storm approached.

* NATIONAL GUARD: Officials said some of the 6,300 National Guard troops mobilized to help in disaster-relief efforts will begin moving out of the city, but some of them will be replaced by guardsmen from other areas.

* UTILITIES: Electricity has been restored to all but a handful of customers. Boil-water directives remained in effect for the Santa Monica Mountains, Pacific Palisades and the West San Fernando Valley. At least 80,000 customers have had gas service restored since the quake, but several thousand more remained without gas.

* TRANSIT: Metrolink trains began stopping Monday in Lancaster and Palmdale. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority set up a line called the Westside Special to help commuters cope with the shutdown of the Santa Monica Freeway (I-10). Buses on Line 634 leave every 20 minutes during weekday morning and evening rush hours, or as demand warrants. The one-way fare is $1.50. A commuter hot line, (800) 286-RIDE, has been set up to provide information on car pools, road closures and other information.
