IRS Waives Deadlines for Quake Victims
The Internal Revenue Service, deluged with calls from earthquake victims frantic about meeting January tax deadlines, said Tuesday that it will waive late-filing penalties for business victims who need extra time to file corporate tax returns, and for individual victims who missed estimated tax payments due Jan. 18.
However, the late returns and payments must be mailed before Feb. 28, and taxpayers must write “L.A. Earthquake” on the top of their returns or letters. Interest charges will still be levied on late payments, but onerous “failure to pay,” “failure to file” and “failure to deposit” penalties will not.
Employers who need extra time to file W-2 forms will also be granted extensions if they fill out an application by Jan. 31, said Nancy McCurley, an IRS spokeswoman in Los Angeles. The agency said it will continue to postpone enforcement actions and waive penalties for quake victims on a case-by-case basis.
