Brian Noonan triggered a three-goal second period with one of his two goals as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the host Detroit Red Wings, 5-0, Tuesday night, handing them their first shutout in more than a year.

It was the fourth shutout of the season for Ed Belfour (20-12-3), who took a 2.71 goals-against average into the contest.

Dirk Graham, Jeremy Roenick and Chris Chelios also scored for Chicago.

The Red Wings led the NHL with 369 goals last season and are No. 1 again this season with 207. The last time they were held scoreless was Jan. 11, 1993, when Guy Hebert and the St. Louis Blues blanked them, 1-0, at Joe Louis Arena.

It was only the third loss in the last 20 games for the Red Wings (26-14-5), who took a 3-0-1 unbeaten string into the contest.

It was a grinding, penalty-filled game that took over three hours to play. Officials handed out a total of 182 penalty minutes. Detroit had 24 for 101 minutes, Chicago 25 for 81.

Pittsburgh 4, Ottawa 2--Martin Straka scored two goals to lead the Penguins at Pittsburgh.

The Senators, with an NHL-worst 9-36-5 record, dropped to 1-12-2 in their last 15 games.

Straka’s second goal came at 2:44 of the third period and broke a tie. Goaltender Darrin Madeley stopped Doug Brown, and Straka was able to beat defenseman Darren Rumble to the rebound.

Joe Mullen scored on a power play at 13:19, knocking in Ron Francis’ pass for his 26th.

The Penguins played without their leading scorer, right wing Jaromir Jagr.

He injured a groin muscle participating in the skills competition at last weekend’s NHL All-Star game.

Quebec 6, Philadelphia 4--Mike Ricci broke a tie with a power-play goal at 5:17 of the third period, lifting the Nordiques at Quebec.

The victory enabled Quebec to avert a sweep by the Flyers in regular-season meetings between the teams after Philadelphia won the first three games.

Ricci’s winner was scored when he deflected in Joe Sakic’s pass from in front of the Flyers’ net.

It was the 200th career point for Ricci and the 300th career point for Mats Sundin, who assisted on the play.

Boston 3, Washington 1--Vincent Riendeau, playing his first NHL game in three months, stopped 29 shots to lift the Bruins at Landover, Md.

Ray Bourque, Bryan Smolinski and Brent Hughes scored for Boston, 3-0-1 in its last four games after losing four consecutively.

Riendeau had not played in the NHL since Oct. 25, when he lost to Dallas as a member of the Detroit Red Wings. He spent time in the minors before being traded to Boston on Jan. 17, and rode the bench behind Jon Casey and John Blue before finally getting a chance.

New York 8, San Jose 3--Mark Messier, Steve Larmer and Tony Amonte had two goals apiece to lead the Rangers over the Sharks at San Jose.

The Rangers gained their fifth consecutive victory and improved their league-best record to 31-12-3. The Sharks had a four-game unbeaten streak ended.

After San Jose’s Sandish Ozolinsh scored the first goal of the game at 2:07 of the first period, the Rangers scored four consecutive times. Messier scored two of those goals in a 2:42 span to give New York a 2-1 lead.

Vancouver 3, St. Louis 3--Goaltenders Curtis Joseph of the Blues and Kirk McLean of the Canucks shut out the opposing offenses in the third period and overtime at Vancouver.

Newly acquired Steve Duchesne scored his first goal for the Blues on a power play in the second period from Craig Janney. Martin Gelinas had a goal and an assist for the Canucks.
