The Ventura Fire Department is scheduled to honor Darrell Kays as Firefighter of the Year at its annual Employee Recognition Night at City Hall tonight.

“He is an exemplary firefighter,” said Jeff Wiens, a spokesman for the 72-member department. “He works his rear end off.”

Kays said he was surprised and pleased by the news.

“It’s an honor because it comes from the other employees, not management,” Kays said. “I like serving the public.”

Kays, 33, joined the department in 1981 and is responsible for testing pumps on the department’s fire engines. Kays, an engine driver, also does rescue work, helps construct maps for the department and maintains breathing equipment.

Other recognition awards are also scheduled to be distributed. The event, which is free, begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Community Meeting Room at City Hall, 501 Poli St.
