Quake’s Power
* As TV viewers in the Midwest and Northeast watched the Rose Bowl game on a typically warm and clear New Year’s Day in Southern California, I remember thinking that I could almost hear that snap-snap of opening suitcases as nearly frozen fingers fumbled for belongings and plans were made to move west. And now I’m almost certain I can hear the sound once more as the luggage is popped open again, contents neatly put in place, and the U-Hauls are returned unused. Oh, the power of an earthquake.
