Andrew Magee and Rick Fehr changed their off-season routines and perhaps their luck.

Magee, whose victory last week at Tucson was his first since 1991, carded a six-under-par 65 Friday, pulling into a tie with Fehr for the second-round lead of the Phoenix Open.

Fehr, who earned $556,322 last year without winning a tournament, shot a 67. Both players are at nine-under-par 133 after 36 holes.

Both also were linked by strength and conditioning programs they began in November.

“I feel good about myself,” said Magee, who has played three consecutive rounds without a bogey. “I feel strong. I gained a lot of strength from the knowledge that I worked that hard to get myself ready to go this year.”

Fehr also said he has been working out.

“I was approached on the range by (ESPN’s) Gary Koch, and he said, ‘Everybody says you’re hitting it longer,’ ” Fehr said. “I said, ‘Who’s telling you that?’ But off the tee I’m lining it solid, and it’s getting out there.”

Fehr and Magee are one shot ahead of Bob Estes, Larry Rinker and Billy Andrade and two shots in front of Tim Simpson, Tom Lehman, Mike Hulbert, Gary McCord and Dan Forsman.

Mike Springer, Bill Glasson, Blaine McAllister, Bob Burns and Ken Green are tied at 136.

Green came within a shot of the course record with a 63 that included a birdie-eagle-birdie-eagle-birdie series on the 12th through 16th holes.

Defending champion Lee Janzen, Gil Morgan, Dave Barr, Steve Pate, Vijay Singh, Bruce Lietzke and Phil Mickelson were at 137.

Seven-two pros and amateur Todd Demsey, who plays for Arizona State, made the cut at 141.

Brett Ogle, winner of the Hawaiian Open two weeks ago, missed the cut at 144 after shooting 73 on Friday.
