A 16-year-old boy was shot Saturday night when he jumped out of a pickup truck in the parking lot of a local restaurant and allegedly fired a pellet gun at an off-duty Los Angeles police officer, authorities said.

The Canyon Country youth, who was booked on assault with a deadly weapon, was shot once in each leg and underwent surgery at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital early Sunday morning, said Deputy Diane Hecht, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s spokeswoman.

He was listed in serious condition, a hospital official said.

The confrontation began about 10 p.m. in the parking lot of Denny’s Restaurant in the 16400 block of DeLone Street in Canyon Country.

The juvenile arrived there with three friends. Two were riding in the cab and two in the truck bed, Hecht said.

The officer, who noticed the truck when he arrived at the restaurant, spotted the youth holding the weapon, whereupon he identified himself as an officer and drew his weapon, Hecht said.

The youth leveled the weapon in his direction and fired once, Hecht said.

The officer returned fire, striking the youth, Hecht said.
