VENTURA : Stubborn Riverbed Brush Fire Smolders

Share

A stubborn brush fire along the edge of the Santa Clara riverbed was still sending up plumes of smoke Monday as investigators continued to search for the cause, authorities said.

Fires began about 7:30 p.m. Saturday in three separate spots, then joined together, covering eight to 10 acres, officials said.

Firefighters had a tough time reaching the flames because they had to carry water hoses through several hundred yards of thick bamboo. The blaze was south of the Buenaventura Golf Course, near radio station KBBY-FM on Olivas Park Drive.

Although the fire was brought under control by late Saturday, it continued to smolder through the weekend. Two county fire companies along with a bulldozer and a water tanker were dispatched again about 10 a.m. Monday to douse a couple of hot spots, said Sandi Wells, a spokeswoman for the county Fire Department.

Wells said investigators have found several campsites they believe may be related to the fire, but they have not ruled the blaze to be arson.
