Ex-Cub Smith OKs One-Year Deal

While he doesn’t have the glamour or magnetism of Bo Jackson, the Angels grabbed another candidate for their left field job Monday when they reached agreement with free agent Dwight Smith.

Smith will sign a one-year contract for about $700,000, according to sources, and be placed on the 40-man roster. The Angels are expected to make the announcement today.

Smith, 30, batted .300 for the Cubs last season with a career-high 11 homer runs. Smith, runner-up for the 1989 National League rookie of the year award, holds the Cubs’ all-time record with 50 pinch-hits in his five-year career.
