COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Without Knight, Indiana Wins in Overtime

Indiana trailed by as many as 11 points and lost Coach Bob Knight to an ejection, but the No. 14 Hoosiers still defeated Ohio State, 87-83, in overtime Wednesday night at Bloomington, Ind.

Knight was ejected after receiving two technical fouls 69 seconds apart in the second half. Both technicals came for arguing with officials.

Without him, the Hoosiers overcame a second-half deficit and moved into a tie for first place in the Big Ten with Michigan. Indiana (13-4, 6-2) extended the nation’s longest home winning streak to 40 games.

Seniors Pat Graham, who finished with 29 points, and Damon Bailey, who had 19, led Indiana in the overtime by combining for 15 points.

Ohio State (9-10, 2-6) was led by Lawrence Funderburke’s 26 points and Jamie Skelton’s 24.

No. 7 Kentucky 82, Alabama 67--Rodrick Rhodes and Anthony Epps each scored five points during a 12-1 spurt that helped carry the Wildcats to a Southeastern Conference victory at Lexington, Ky.

Kentucky (17-3, 7-2) opened the second half with an 11-3 run to overcome a 37-36 halftime deficit. Alabama (10-7, 6-3) got back to 47-44 on Antonio McDyess’ layup with 15:28 to play.

Andre Riddick’s basket 25 seconds later got Kentucky going again and, after an Alabama turnover, Rhodes drove in for a dunk for a 51-44 advantage.

Rhodes finished with a season-high 23 points as Kentucky won its 33rd consecutive game in Rupp Arena. McDyess led Alabama with 22 points and 11 rebounds.

No. 16 Wisconsin 87, Michigan State 62--Michael Finley scored 32 points, including 25 in the first half, to lead the Badgers to a Big Ten victory over the Spartans at Madison, Wis.

The Badgers, playing without injured freshman center Rashard Griffith, used a Big Ten record 14 three-pointers, including five by Finley, to avenge an early-season loss at Michigan State.

Finley made 12 of 19 shots from the field and added 11 rebounds and five assists for Wisconsin (14-3, 5-3). Michigan State (14-7, 5-4) was led by Shawn Respert’s 21 points.

Marquette 58, No. 17 Alabama Birmingham 54--Roney Eford scored 13 points, including a key three-point shot with 1:24 left, to give the Warriors an upset victory in a Great Midwest Conference game at Milwaukee.

The Warriors (14-5, 6-1) defeated Alabama Birmingham for the second time this season and retained first place in the conference. Carter Long led the Blazers (16-3, 4-2) with 19 points.

No. 18 Saint Louis 94, Dayton 75--Erwin Claggett scored 25 points, including seven of Saint Louis’ school-record 14 three-point baskets, to lead the Billikens to a Great Midwest victory at St. Louis.

Saint Louis (17-1, 4-1) matched its victory total for the previous two seasons. The Billikens have made 154 three-pointers this season, including 13 on two occasions.

Scott Highmark added 20 points and nine rebounds and had four three-pointers. Donnie Dobbs had 19 points and H Waldman added 13 points and 10 assists. Chip Hare had 22 points and seven rebounds for Dayton (4-12, 0-4), which has lost nine in a row.

Virginia 73, No. 21 Maryland 66--Junior Burrough upstaged Maryland freshman Joe Smith with 26 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks, carrying the Cavaliers (12-5, 6-2) to an Atlantic Coast Conference victory at Charlottesville, Va.

Smith, who came in leading the nation’s freshmen in scoring (20.8), rebounds (10.7) and blocks (3.6), had a season-low 10 points, 12 rebounds and two blocks for Maryland (12-5, 5-3).

Iowa 92, No. 22 Minnesota 88--Freshman Jess Settles scored 19 points and freshman Chris Kingsbury made five three-pointers to lead the Hawkeyes to a Big Ten victory over the Gophers at Iowa City.

Iowa made 13 of 31 three-point attempts, with Kingsbury and Mon’ter Glasper each scoring 15 points for Iowa (9-8, 3-5). Voshon Lenard scored 30 points for Minnesota (14-7, 4-4), including 15 in the final 4:25. Randy Carter added 14.

No. 24 Florida 68, Auburn 67--Dan Cross scored 20 points and made a 10-foot jumper with 1:21 remaining that led the Gators to a Southeastern Conference victory at Gainesville, Fla.

Craig Brown and Dametri Hill each had 14 points for the Gators (17-3, 7-1). Wesley Person led Auburn (5-12, 0-9) with 27 points.
