COLLEGE BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Griffin Has 27 Points in Valley’s Victory

Valley College freshman Craig Griffin scored 19 of his 27 points in the second half of the Monarchs’ 74-66 victory over West L.A. in a Western State Conference Southern Division game Wednesday night at West L.A.

Griffin made all four of his three-point attempts and added six assists.

Monarch forward Darius Moses had 12 points and 11 assists.

Valley (10-15, 2-3 in division play) trailed at halftime, 32-30, but scored 44 points in the second half to pull away.

In another men’s game:

Glendale 69, Bakersfield 56--James Parker scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half and also had seven rebounds as Glendale posted a WSC Southern Division victory at Glendale.

Mike Wright had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Ryan Asplund added 12 points for Glendale (12-12, 3-1).

WOMEN

Oxnard 52, Ventura 51--Blanca Rodriguez knocked the ball loose from Tara Sanders to score what turned out to be the game-winning layup with 40 seconds left to play, stopping the Pirates’ 39-game Western State Conference winning streak.

Both teams are 4-1 in Northern Division play.

Rodriguez and Edith Bradley led the Condors with 13 points each, while Sanders pumped in 21 for Ventura.

The Pirates were plagued by a 23% (10-42) shooting performance from the floor.

Valley 65, Pierce 57--Cicely Brewster had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead the Monarchs in a Western State Conference Southern Division game at Crespi High.

Nicole Baynes added eight points and six assists for Valley (12-15, 3-1.

Pierce’s Angela Rich scored 19 points, including five three-pointers.

Antelope Valley 77, Mt. San Jacinto 36--The Marauders won their fourth consecutive game and stayed in a first-place tie in the Foothill Conference. It was never close as Antelope Valley led, 37-12, at halftime.

Margo Stanley had 27 points, Shannon Nash added 25 and Tanya Green had 17 to lead the Marauders (10-10, 5-1).

Northern Arizona 63, Cal State Northridge 37--The Matadors, shooting 26% from the field, fell to 2-17.

The Matadors had more turnovers (25) than free-throw attempts (20) and were outrebounded, 52-36.

The Lumberjacks shot only 36% from the floor.

Karli Rikli had 10 points and 12 rebounds for Northern Arizona. Rikli, however, hit only three of her 12 shots from the field. She was the only player in the game to break into double figures.

Guard Shannon Crouse led the Matadors with nine points, hitting three of seven field-goal attempts. Michelle Esparza, who hit four of six free throws, added eight points. Center Carrie Dormire scored only two points, hitting only one of eight shots. Dormire, though, led the Matadors with eight rebounds, three on the offensive end.

Bakersfield 54, Glendale 50--Bakersfield rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat Glendale in a Western State Conference Southern Division game at Glendale.

Susie Woo and Makela Theriault each scored 17 points for Glendale (9-12, 5-6 in conference, 1-4 in division).
